Clare rang sounding very distressed; her dog had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a highly aggressive form of bone cancer and on Monday morning he was having the whole of his front quarter amputated. It was radical surgery and the future looked very bleak, could I help?

Clare’s vet gave permission for me to work on Caleb, so we arranged for me to see him when he came home from the veterinary hospital. The first evening I met Caleb he was very sick. The wound appeared to be healing fine but Caleb was not dealing very well with his newly acquired disability. His effort to walk on three legs was painful to watch. He was very depressed, didn’t want to eat and was generally withdrawing from the world. Both Clare and the vet feared what the future held.

There was an 18 inch line of stitching on Caleb’s left side, bright pink and purple bruising and lots of swelling. He settled down quickly and allowed me to tune in. I mentally tried to explain to Caleb why this radical surgery had been necessary and reminded him how much Clare and Paul loved him. I sensed his anxiety start to ease and Claire commented that he looked more relaxed. By the end of the treatment Caleb was peaceful. I also gave Reiki to Clare.

After I left, Caleb ate his dinner without encouragement. He settled down for a good night’s sleep and in the morning, much to Clare’s relief, he greeted her at the door. That evening he went to see the vet. The swelling and bruising had gone and Caleb was bright and alert.

We worked out a treatment plan designed to make the most of both the allopathic and Reiki treatments. Caleb was to have alternating combinations of Chemotherapy at three weekly intervals six times. He was given Reiki half way between the doses.

The first dose of Chemotherapy upset his digestive system, I felt the Reiki go to his stomach first on my following visit. Next he cleared the huge strain on muscles that felt as though they had a large build-up of lactic acid. After the second dose of Chemotherapy, Caleb was not sick and there was very little difference in his appetite. Clare reported this back to the vet who was bemused because dogs are usually more upset by the second combination than the first. He had lost a little weight but his appetite was normal and he was keeping food down. He was enjoying walks that were being re-introduced. The vet was pleased that he was not experiencing the usual side effects of Chemotherapy.

Clare was astonished when Caleb decided it was time to play with Kiri, his companion. Towards the end of the Chemotherapy Caleb was able to do his most difficult walks. They were nearly 2 hours long and included rough terrain. On one walk, Caleb found a tree that needed "scent marking," he lifted his leg and promptly fell over. He picked himself up, shook off the dirt and carried on. By the next week he had figured out how to prop himself on the tree.

The final Chemotherapy session was delayed by two days for the blood count to come within acceptable range and then he was given the maximum dose for his weight. This made him quiet for a few days but four weeks later Clare felt she had her old Caleb back.

Clare writes her thoughts on Caleb’s treatment.

"Paul and I believe that without Reiki healing our wonderful Rhodesian Ridgeback Caleb would not be with us now.

Five days after the amputation of his front left leg due to Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) Caleb's remaining front leg had swollen to about 3 times it's normal size and he could hardly walk, his whole left side was covered in dark purple bruising, he wouldn't eat and spent a lot of the time whimpering or yelping.  On the Tuesday evening we took Caleb to the Vet who was shocked at how ill he was and told us that he didn't think that Caleb would survive and he insisted that we brought him back to see him on Thursday morning.  On Wednesday evening Alison came to give Caleb his first Reiki session and during it I could feel an electrical buzzing/vibration running through the room and after some initial nervousness Caleb settled down and soaked it up.  The following morning the change was miraculous all his bruising, except a small area around his groin, and all the swelling in his leg had gone, he started walking and wagging his tail.  We took Caleb back to the Vet the same day and he was amazed and said that he was now so well that he didn't need to see him again unless he took a turn for the worse.  The following week after the second Reiki session Caleb began eating and has never looked back.

Alison continued the Reiki healing sessions throughout his Chemotherapy and since the medical treatment finished has continued with the sessions on a quarterly basis.  Osteosarcoma is an aggressive form of cancer which has normally spread prior to amputation and which cannot be cured with chemotherapy unless dangerously high levels are given.  The specialist centre VRCC which treated Caleb gave palliative doses of Chemotherapy which on average give a life expectancy after Osteosarcoma of 1 year.  Caleb is still extremely fit, healthy, happy and showing no symptoms and it is now 15 months since the treatment began.

We met Alison by chance at a charity event and recognised her to be a genuine, caring person and although we didn't believe in any type of faith healing at the time we are now so grateful that she gave us her card and that we kept it, as it has been proved to us beyond a doubt that Reiki has a powerful healing effect."

Special thanks to Claire for allowing us to tell Caleb's story.  If you feel that Alison could possibly help you, please e-mail your questions to alison@sandfordtherapies.co.uk and we will contact you by return.  If you do not have access to e-mail then please go to our contact us page for further details.
